Catholic World Report interviews Emilio Estevez on The Way
Readers get a fascinating look at the artist and his film on the Camino de Santiago
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 17, 2012 – Catholic World Report Editor-in-Chief Carl Olson recently interviewed Emilio Estevez to talk about The Way, the film Estevez wrote, directed and appeared in with his father, Martin Sheen.
“The thing that impressed me about Emilio is his thoughtfulness,” Olson said, “and the obvious humility that comes through. He’s making movies that really matter, like The Way, and his thoughts on the creative process are fascinating.”
Catholic World Report, now in its 21st year, became an all-digital publication in January. Since then Olson and his staff have created an online home for the magazine that is attracting a hefty stream of regular visitors – thanks to fresh content like this interview with Estevez.
“Not many people know that he was writing adaptations and screenplays in his late teens that were being made into movies,” Olson said. “Emilio truly is a complete artist. He writes well, directs well and acts well. I believe readers will enjoy this piece on him and The Way as much as we enjoyed putting it together for Catholic World Report.”
In the movie, Tom (Martin Sheen) is an irascible American doctor who comes to France to deal with the tragic loss of his son (Estevez). Rather than returning home, Tom decides to embark on the historical pilgrimage, “The Way of St. James,” to honor his son’s desire to finish the journey. What Tom doesn’t plan on is the profound impact this trip will have on him. Through unexpected and oftentimes amusing experiences along “The Way,” Tom discovers the difference between “the life we live and the life we choose.”
The Way comes to DVD on Feb. 21, and is available from Ignatius Press, which publishes Catholic World Report.
